Police Chiefs & Sheriff’s Speak Against Texas Immigration Crackdown AUDIO

The debate over whether local law enforcement in Texas should inquire about immigration status is again front and center at the State Capitol.

Conservatives argue that police chiefs and sheriff’s should not prohibit their officers from asking about immigration status.  But, the people who run those departments say changing state laws to deal with a federal issue will complicate the legal process, invite lawsuits, and cost taxpayers way more than most people would be willing to pay.

This morning, I talked with Dallas County Sheriff Lupe Valdez about her contention that rounding up illegal immigrants in North Texas would cost too much and essentially force her to release violent criminals.  Listen:

Governor Perry made this an “emergency issue” during the regular session of the legislature, but the proposal didn’t survive.  It has been revived during the special session.
