Explaining (To America) Governor Perry’s Stance on Gay Marriage

Governor Perry

It seems Gov. Perry confused some social conservatives and the national media when he recently said that that it as “OK” with him that New York has legalized gay marriage.

Here’s the full quote:

“Our friends in New York six weeks ago passed a statute that said marriage can be between two people of the same sex. And you know what? That’s New York, and that’s their business, and that’s fine with me.” He continued, “That is their call. If you believe in the 10th Amendment, stay out of their business.”

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, who has no shot of winning the GOP nomination but has a following among social conservatives, immediately slammed the Governor.  On Twitter, he asked:

“So Gov Perry, if a state wanted to allow polygamy or if they chose to deny heterosexuals the right to marry, would that be OK too?”

To help me figure out exactly where the Governor is on this, I picked up the phone and called Perry supporter Kelly Shackelford at the Liberty Legal Institute in Plano.  He explained that the governor wasn’t as “artful” in his comments as he could have been.  He says the governor remains committed to banning gay marriage at the federal level via constitutional amendment, but acknowledges that, as things are now, New York is free to do whatever the legislature decides.

Interesting.  So, this opens things up for debate.   Former Texas Republican Party Chairman Cathie Adams and liberal commentator Geoff Berg squared off on KRLD.
